A widescreen image is a film, computer or television image with a wider and shorter aspect ratio than the standard Academy frame developed during the classical Hollywood cinema era. Historically, consumer TVs have been 4:3, and since many U.S. TV viewers seem to prefer to see a TV screen completely filled with image, U.S. television networks often show widescreen movies with the sides truncated, using a technique called pan and scan. Part of the image is concealed because of this truncation.

It all really depends on the user. It's pretty much just a better screen ratio for playing movies. Also, It's much nicer if you're into video/sound editing, 3d or graphic design, and other stuff similar. You just have more area to work with.
For those average computer user, one thing they will instantly notice is that in Windows Explorer you can now easily see long file names, file sizes, file types, and the date modified. Also they are good at watching DVD or live TV broadcast in the web. I'm not sure if the extra cost is worth it for the average computer user though, since it's not mass produce as the ordinary ones, so cost will always be higher. However it's definitely a good upgrade for those power users.

The image used as a background on a computer screen is called wallpaper or desktop picture. It is usually for the desktop of a graphical user interface. 'Wallpaper' is the term used in Microsoft Windows, while the Mac OS calls it a 'desktop background'. PNG and JPEG are the most common format. The images used as computer desktop wallpaper are usually with the same size as the display resolution of your screen in order to fill the whole background. Common wallpaper resolutions are 800x600, 1024x768, 1280x1024 and 1600x1200. However widescreen monitors are now available in the market with resolutions 1280x800, 1440x900, 1600x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1200, 2560x1600, 2560x1024.
