The Vodafone Group is a mobile network operator incorporated in England. Its registered office is Vodafone House, The Connection, Newbury, Berkshire, RG14 2FN, England. The name Vodafone comes from "Voice data fone". By the end of 2007 Vodafone had 252 million proportionate customers in 25 markets across 5 continents, the eight markets where it has more than ten million proportionate customers are the United Kingdom, Germany, India, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Egypt and the United States.
Vodafone UK - On January 1, 1985 the company made the UK’s first mobile call. It marked the launch of the mobile industry and transformed global communications. Today the Mobile Group is the world’s leading international mobile telecommunications group.
- Vodafone Germany - It is the second largest operator in the country with 32.5 million customers, that's over 34.9% of market share. Currently, the network serves both prepaid and postpaid customers on GSM and UMTS (with HSDPA).
- Vodafone India - Vodafone Essar in India is a subsidiary of Vodafone Group Plc and commenced operations in 1994 when its predecessor Hutchison Telecom acquired the cellular licence for Mumbai. Vodafone Essar now has operations in 16 circles covering 86% of India's mobile customer base, with over 41.1 million customers.
- Vodafone Italy - The company has 29,151,000 customers, as of 30 September 2007 and a market share of 33.4%, placing it just behind TIM. The company slogan varies from that of the international Vodafone campaign (Make the most of now) and is Life is NOW.
- Vodafone Spain - The Company went live in 1995. Its headquarters are in Alcobendas, a town near Madrid. It is the second biggest cellphone carrier in Spain in terms of customer number with 14 million.
- Vodafone Turkey - Currently the country's second largest mobile phone operator. It had 13.8M 11 million active subscribers in March 07, approximately a 25% share of the market.
- Vodafone Egypt - The company provides a wide range of communication services, including voice and data, across Egypt. Since its inception in 1998, the company has drawn on the global strength of Vodafone Group as well as its own in-house research and development of innovative products tailored specifically for the Egyptian mobile market.
