Known and founded as Fleet Call, Inc. in 1987, before changing it's name to Nextel Communications, Inc. in 1993 of March. And in August 1994, Nextel agrees to buy all of Motorola's SMR radio licenses in the United States, providing Nextel with significant spectrum rights in each of the top 50 U.S. markets.
Nextel introduces Motorola's breakthough iDEN technology in September 1996, the first to combine enhanced digital cellular, two-way radio and text/numeric paging in one phone — the Nextel phone. Through recent market launches, Nextel and Nextel Partners service is available today in areas of the U.S. where approximately 242 million people live or work. However the name "Nextel" is planned to be phase out by year 2010 as evident by plan to change the name of NASCAR's top racing series from "Nextel Cup" which started in 2003 to Nascar Sprint Cup starting in 2008.
