They are actual sound recording with all musical accompaniment and artist voice. The recording was then spliced to a small part where it can fit to a cellular phone. The usual range of the recording is around 20 seconds, depending on the phone of course.

You can download thousands of ringtones directly to your phones through WAP or you can download them to your computers and then transferring them using a datacable, blue tooth or infrared. You can also download free ring tones on the internet if you don't want to pay. The downside of this though is that most of this free ringtone are old.

Lastly you can create your own ringtone. This is the best way to get them. At first you need to pay for the the software at around $9 to $25, depending on the software of course, but afterwards you'll get your tone absolutely free, you can create all the ring tone you like all the time. So it's much like an investment, but the best thing about this is that the ring tone you created is unique.
